MEDIA WORKSHOPS
Under the guidance of Founder and Artistic Director Linda Bouchard, NEXMAP's musical education and outreach programs provided creative, artistic explorations located at the intersection of traditional practices and new technologies for young people and other non-traditional audiences. NEXMAP has delivered workshops, created resources, and fostered communities of practice for educators and learners in and out of school.

2011 Winter-Spring Semester at June Jordan School for Equity
When youth are given tools to engage new technologies in creative ways, they move from passive consumers to critically engaged creators. Hands-on creative projects allow students to develop new skills, invest themselves in their work and become their own advocates. We live in a world saturated with digital music and media but a lot is happening beyond Garage Band and basic looping -- young people are aware of this but are rarely exposed to the available tools or given the chance to explore new possibilities.
In the 2011 Winter-Spring Semester NEXMAP and June Jordan School for Equity teamed up to pilot a dynamic 14-week New Media Elective in Sound and Technology. During this class students explored Sound, how it surrounds us, how it can be manipulated to make music, and how the process of reformulating sounds can offer new ways of experiencing our surroundings.

As a prequel to the semester long elective class NEXMAP plans to offer in 2011, Sonami brought her wares and talent to high schoolers. In a very intimate setting, 45 students heard a performance by the innovator behind the Ladie's Glove and had a chance to ask questions and understand how the artist makes her magic.

On February 13, 2009, saxophonist Michel Doneda captivated 72 teens at June Jordan School for Equity with a musical presentation and demonstration. The 50 minute presentation involved performance, demonstration and a question & answer session.

Sound and installation artist Luis Maurette led 15 teens from Meridian Gallery's Meridian Internship Program through part two of the Building Sounds workshop. In a number of hands-on activities students were invited to explore the use of contact mics to amplify minute sounds, discovering an entire microcosm while learning about the mechanics of sound and simple electronics.

Cellist Leighton Fong captivated 12 teens at Meridian gallery with a musical presentation and demonstration about Kaija Saariaho “Sept Papillons” for solo cello.
Teens then attended "Furious Craft," a full performance evening presented by the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players featuring works by Francesconi, Zhou Long and Piere Boulez’s masterpiece “Le Marteau sans Maître.”

Focused on building contact microphones; through this process youth were introduced to some basic electrical and electronic music concepts. The group engaged in using the materials to build some contact microphones for themselves.

June 6, 2008 – from the SFAI City Studio Program. Culminating Exhibition at Zero1 (San Jose CA, USA)
Usernomics is a hacktivist workshop employing models of waste reclamation, recycling and reuse. Participants will engage in hacking (taking apart and repurposing) discarded keyboards and toys and reprogram them to make one-of-a-kind external computer controllers. Participants will also be guided through the process of video hacking, and will make their own graphical icons/avatars to replace those in existing video games.
On June 6th, 2008, documentation of Usernomics and live performances will be presented as part of the arts education programming of Zero1: A global festival of art on the edge.

The electronic musician conducted a special demonstration for 15 teens of the Meridian Internship Program (MIP). Seven teens from Meridian Internship Program (MIP) attended the performance at The Red Poppy Art House featuring performances by Lulacruza as well as sound artist Loren Chasse, video artist Cecilia Elguero and cellist Agnes Szelag.
JOHN CAGE'S 18 MICROTONAL RAGAS | AN OTHER MINDS EVENT
November 2, 2007 – at St. John's Presbyterian Church
Eight teens from the Meridian Internship Program (MIP) attend the performance of John Cage - Solo for voice 58 by Amelia Cuni, an Italian-German dhrupad singer. Cuni's performance was accompanied by percussion, tonal accompaniment, and electronics by Raymond Kaczynski, Federico Sanesi, and Werner Durand. A 30-minute presentation by the artists preceded the performance. An Other Minds event.

September 5, 2007 – at Theater Artaud
The three musicians conducted a special demonstration in Spanish for seven Latino teens from the John O'Connell School of Technology afterschool program (JOST). Following the performance on September 7, Andres Solis and Rogelio Sosa conducted a live performance, artist's talk, and demo for a group of 20 students at Convent of the Sacred Heart High School.
PAMELA Z | SONIC GESTURES

Six teens from the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula/South Bay were invited to attend the world premiere of Pamela Z's performance during which she performed her piece twice and engaged in a dialogue with the audience about her process in between each performance.
